The Union government’s decision to withdraw the ‘no-detention’ policy for Classes 5 and 8, allowing schools to fail students who do not pass year-end exams, has been met with opposition from several educationists in the State. They have raised concerns that this change will disproportionately affect children from marginalized groups, including Dalits, tribal communities, backward classes, and rural areas. There are fears that it could lead to an increase in dropouts and push children into the labor market.
However, the decision has been welcomed by some private school managements and student groups.
