Team Academic Insights wishes a very happy birthday to Dr. K. V. Chidananda, President of the Academy of Liberal Education, Sullia. A surgeon by training, Dr. Chidananda studied medicine at Mysore Medical College and earned his MS in General Surgery at Stanley Medical College, Madras. He could have built his career in any big city. Instead, he returned to Sullia, and in 1979 he set up the town’s first X-ray unit, taking the first steps towards the healthcare the region had long been without.
Over the decades since, he has helped turn his father Late Dr. Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda’s vision into one of Karnataka’s most complete education and healthcare campuses. He saw KVG Medical College through its early years, when doctors took free treatment camps and mobile units into the villages to reach patients. Under his leadership the college has grown from 100 to 150 MBBS seats, and the KVG institutions now send out more than 500 doctors every year across medicine, dentistry, ayurveda and postgraduate courses. He leads the group’s medical, dental, ayurveda, law, nursing, physiotherapy and paramedical institutions. All the while, he has kept a close eye on where it all began: Nehru Memorial College, which celebrates its Golden Jubilee this year. To mark the milestone, Team Academic Insights is proud to announce a special issue of Institutions of Legacy, celebrating three generations of dedicated leadership.
As NMC marks fifty years, Dr. Chidananda is already looking ahead, to a dedicated cancer hospital and to the day when every advanced specialty is available right here in Sullia. On his birthday, we thank him for a lifetime of service to the people of the region, and wish him good health, happiness and many more years of leading the institutions he has helped build. Happy birthday, sir!
