The Birla Institute of Technology & Science, BITS Pilani is an all-India Institute for higher education. The primary motive of BITS is to “train young men and women able and eager to create and put into action such ideas, methods, techniques and information”. The Institute is a dream come true of its founder late Mr G.D.Birla – an eminent industrialist, a participant in Indian freedom struggle and a close associate of the Father of Indian Nation late Mr. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi). What started in early 1900s as a small school, blossomed into a set of colleges for higher education, ranging from the Humanities to Engineering until 1964 when all these colleges amalgamated to culminate into a unique Indian University of International standing. This university was christened as the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, known to many as BITS, Pilani.

Over the years, BITS has provided the highest quality technical education to students from all over India admitted on the basis of merit. Its graduates may be found throughout the world in all areas of engineering, science and commerce. BITS symbolizes the maturing of Indian technical ability and “can-do” entrepreneurial spirit, especially as derived from the private sector. BITS is located in the Vidya Vihar campus adjacent to the town of Pilani in Rajasthan.

BITS, Pilani has been accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) with A grade with a CGPA of 3.71 on a four point scale

BITS Pilani has grown steadily in last fifty years and is now a multi-campus university with over 11000 on-campus and over 21,000 off-campus students. Over the last 5 years, BITS Pilani has undertaken a spectrum of initiatives to drive excellence in both academic and non-academic areas. These initiatives are being carried out by a number of teams / individuals at various departments, divisions and units across campuses.

However, for admission to B.E. Biotechnology, Candidates with Physics, Chemistry and Biology will also be accepted with a minimum aggregate of 60% in Physics, Chemistry & Biology subjects with at least 50% marks in each subject. If a Candidate has secured less than 50% marks in any one of these subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics / Biology but meets the aggregate criteria mentioned above,  he/she may be considered for provisional admission. The admission will be confirmed only upon the successful completion of a remedial course in that subject with a minimum grade of ‘C’, offered by the institute preferably before the commencement of the first semester. If instead of marks any letter grades or GPA are awarded (or any other system of evaluation), their equivalences in marks will be decided by the Admissions Committee..

English is the medium of instruction, therefore good proficiency in English is essential for admission. Candidates who have completed their qualifying examination from Non-English medium must have secured a minimum TOEFL Score of 500 in paper based test or 61 in internet based test or have an IELTS Score of 5 or above. If necessary, they will also be assessed by a campus committee for English comprehension.

Overall Aggregate:: Aggregate is the total marks of all subjects in the Qualifying Examination, considered essential by the Board / University for passing the examination. The Aggregate must compulsorily contain the required subjects, namely, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/ Biology. The position in the merit list will be based mainly only on this aggregate

Note: Admission is based on the Grade 12 marks (or its equivalent) and there is no separate Admission Test for Dubai Campus.

Placement Process:

About or Nearly 500 students from the Pilani campus sit for placements every semester, of these almost 100% succeed in securing a job.

The placement scenario at all our campuses has always been extremely positive, most of our students have their career paths charted much before graduation. Almost 500 students from the Pilani campus sit for placements every semester, of these almost 100% succeed in securing a job.

About or Nearly 160 reputed companies visited our campuses in the previous placement season 2010 -2011, a number of whom were repeat visitors.

Dual Phased Placement Season: A distinguishing factor in our placement season is the fact that it occurs in 2 separate phases. This is because of the Practice School program in the final year when only half of the final year students may be present in campus at a given point of time. The phases are as follows:

August to November  – First Semester

January to April    – Second Semester

Most companies send in recruitment teams twice in a year to meet all the students of the graduating batch.
